Vicente Díaz Díaz, an 11th grader at The Thomas Jefferson STEM School, has earned a spot on the 4-student high school team representing Chile at the 38th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI)—the world’s most prestigious competitive programming and algorithmic problem-solving tournament for school aged students.
Vicente is also the only team member from outside the Santiago Metropolitan Region, proudly putting the Bío Bío Region on the global map.
He secured his spot on the national team after outstanding performances throughout the regionals, the national finals, and an intensive selection training camp.
According to Diario Financiero, “competitive programming involves solving complex algorithmic problems under tight time constraints. At the IOI, solutions must be coded in C++, the language used by the vast majority of international competitors.” Vicente is now putting in long hours solving practice problems to ensure he and his teammates are fully prepared for the world stage.
The team will compete from August 9 to 16 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where they will go head-to-head against participants from over 90 countries.
